It is with hearts weighed down by grief that the Management, Editorial Board and Staff of PillarToday Newspaper announce the passing of our beloved Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Anietie B. Akpan, whose transition in the early hours of Monday, August 3, 2026, has left an irreplaceable void in our organisation and the journalism profession in Cross River state.
Mr. Akpan, who was not only the Editor-in Chief but a co-founder of PillarToday, was the intellectual compass of our newsroom, a mentor, a leader of uncommon integrity, and a passionate advocate of truth, fairness and responsible journalism.
His steadfast commitment to professionalism, accuracy and public interest journalism shaped the identity of our newspaper and inspired all of us who had the privilege of working with him.
Throughout his career, he championed responsible journalism and mentored many young reporters, editors and media practitioners,
Through his wisdom, humility and unwavering dedication, he nurtured and instilled in our staff the values of courage, discipline, excellence and service.
Mr Anietie Akpan is leaving behind a legacy of integrity, excellence and selfless service that will continue to inspire not only us in PillarToday but the future generations of media practitioners.
His leadership of our organisation transformed challenges into opportunities and strengthened our resolve to remain a credible voice for the people of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.
Although his physical presence is no longer with us, his ideals, principles and enduring legacy will continue to guide our work. The values he lived by will remain the foundation upon which PillarToday will continue to serve society with honesty, balance and integrity.
As we mourn this painful loss, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his beloved family, friends, members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Cross River state council and everyone whose lives he touched. We pray that Almighty God grants them strength, comfort and the grace to bear this irreparable loss.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course. May his soul rest in peace
