The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a man allegedly posing as a medical doctor after he reportedly swindled a woman of ₦500,000 with a promise to secure jobs for her children at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
The Police statement which was released on Tuesday stated that the suspect, Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme, 39, was apprehended by operatives of the Uwanse Police Division after the victim, Mrs. Edemawan Samuel, lodged a complaint.
Police alleged that the suspect deceived the woman by presenting himself as a qualified medical practitioner and collected the money under the guise of facilitating employment.
Detectives reportedly recovered medical equipment and other items believed to have been used in carrying out the alleged fraud.
Police spokesman, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, disclosed, “The Commissioner of Police has directed that a thorough investigation be carried out to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case and determine whether there are other victims.”
He added, “Upon the conclusion of investigations, the suspect will be charged to court if sufficient evidence is established.”
The police said investigations were continuing to identify possible accomplices and urged members of the public to be cautious of individuals offering employment opportunities in exchange for money.
