In recent weeks the Cross River State Government had confirmed a fresh case of COVID-19, the first recorded infection in the state since 2022.
But on Monday, May 4, the state has assured residents that the situation is under control.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing in Calabar, stressing that there was no cause for alarm.
According to Ayuk, the confirmed case involved a 53-year-old Chinese expatriate who works with a company in Akamkpa Local Government Area.
He explained that the patient arrived in Nigeria about a month ago and later developed mild symptoms that required medical attention.
The commissioner said the individual was admitted to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where samples were collected for laboratory analysis.
“Samples were taken and subjected to the necessary diagnostic procedures to confirm COVID-19,” Ayuk stated.
He added that the patient is currently receiving treatment at a designated isolation centre and is responding well.
Ayuk noted that authorities delayed public disclosure until all medical confirmations were completed to avoid unnecessary panic.
“We took a cautious approach to ensure accuracy. Our surveillance and response systems are fully active,” he said.
Currently, there has been officially confirmation that Cross River State is COVID-19 free.
