Worried by the growing wave of insecurity across Nigeria, the South-South Zone of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has called on governments to strengthen security measures and improve collaboration with communities to tackle emerging threats.
The journalists made the call at the end of their one day Zonal Executive Council meeting held in Calabar.
The meeting, chaired by the Zonal Vice President, Comrade Opaka Dokubo, reviewed issues affecting both the union and the South-South region.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the council warned that insecurity was gradually spreading to communities once regarded as safe.
“The Zone expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation across the country, noting the gradual spread of insecurity into areas previously regarded as peaceful,” the communiqué stated.
The union urged state governments to intensify efforts aimed at protecting lives and property.
Delegates stressed the need for stronger grassroots participation in security management.
According to the communiqué,
“The meeting advocated intensified community policing, proper profiling of persons entering communities and stronger collaboration between residents and security agencies.”
The journalists also raised concerns over the misuse of military apparel by criminal elements.
The communiqué stated that authorities should be vigilant regarding vehicles escorted by persons wearing military uniforms.
“There is a proliferation of military wares in the hands of non-state actors,” the communiqué warned.
The meeting also focused on developments within the union.
The council commended the Cross River State Council for hosting the gathering and reviving zonal activities.
It congratulated Comrade Festus Alenkhe on his appointment as Managing Director of Edo Broadcasting Corporation.
The journalists equally praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for the appointment.
The council applauded the Federal Government for progress on the Calabar-Itu Highway and completion of the Aba-Ikot Ekpene Highway.
The union further urged media practitioners to uphold ethical standards and professionalism as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum.
